Kelly Park Red Course, December 2005, Ron Eaglin

Start to Control 1
Easy run used the corner of the parking lot as an attack point and saw the flag within seconds of leaving the pavement.

Control 1 to Control 2
Nearly all trail running. I saw the flag right where I planned to attack it and bashed through heavy brush to get to it. I then discovered there was an easy trail leading into and out of the location, so I took it out.

Control 2 to Control 3
Again a lot of trail, the attack point was the trail bend and the flag was visible from the attack point - actually 2 flags hanging on the far side of the palm tree - but they were blowing in the breeze making them both visible.

Control 3 to Control 4
Again back to trail with a distinct attack point, actually a choice, go to the fence corner OR turn due south at the thicket on the North side of the trail. A flag was visible due south but turned out to be about 30 meters west of the correct flag. It was also easily visible.

Control 4 to Control 5
5 appeared to be the most challenging of the controls. I used the two intersection to get a feel for my pace (1:35 from trail to trail) and decided to attack at 1:45 after the intersection. The hill was readily visible and I was planning on using it as an attack, but all the vegetation mapped was gone. Instead with the high visibility I decided to use the hilltop as my reference and go straight for the flag taking a bearing off the hilltop. Sure enough the flag was visible just south of a distinct tree and as I approached I saw Dave Shuman who either saw me or the flag approach from the opposite direction.

Control 5 to Control 6
This was simply picking a good attack point from a trail again. The distinct tree was my selected attack point - but it was not visible so I used the trail bend. Keeping my bearing through here was a little tricky, but I saw the eastern depression on approach and quickly spotted the flag just west of of it.

Control 6 to Control 7
I turned on the full speed for this long trail run, I was under 30 minutes on the course so I was pretty sure I could break 60 minutes with the few controls remaining. I planned to attack on a vegetation boundary - but it was not there so I used the sloped part of the hill along the path. The distinct palm tree north of the control made the location easy to spot.

Control 7 to Control 8
Again afterburners since there was a lot of trail. The attack point for 8 was trivial (trail intersection) - but I did not even wait until I reached it, instead cutting across and angling to the two thickets which unlike most of the mapped vegetative features still existed.

Control 8 to 9
I purposefully overran the actual location by about 30 meters along the E-W trail and then went into the woods and doubled back paralleling the trail going east. This was a conservative approach that ensured I would hit the flag since it was not visible from the trail. It was exactly where I expected it to be and I hoped the extra 40 seconds would not hurt me too much on my time.

Control 9 to 10
All trail, all easy

Control 10 to Finish
