I tried to make the 1st event after the summer break as easy as possible due to the heat and new recruits to the JROTC program. This venue gives us the oppurtunity to define how many features we can use without any elevations to define our map. It can be tough.
Since this was a JROTC non-comp. event, there was a contingent of high schoolers at our Start/Finish table all day, good thing they came in waves. Some cadets ran YELLOW, then ORANGE and if they were not tired got to try GREEN, perhaps the reason for the number of DNF's on each. There were some individuals that lost their punch cards quickly, so they got to volunteer at our Finish table and record times and with this help,ha, we still did not have a hanging score sheet. We ran out of Yellow, Orange and short of Green maps, though all returnees were willing to recycle their maps, a big thanks again.
Bob P. ran around and recruited help from anyone standing idle. He was not called on to give instructions, so all the HS kids were primed and ready. I had a bus driver from Crystal River HS come over and sat for 2 hours and organize the returning cards, Russ sat at the Start log for 3 hours without looking up for a breather. I suggested to both to venture off to the head and stretch. I looked around and found all of the 10 picnic tables occupied and some people in their own chairs. We had many new school instructors and discussions on Orienteering in Florida.
Frank Kuhn came out and helped at the Registration table, told me that he is 'cancer-free' after many years of having the spots and was assisted by Blaik Mathews. I saw Mike tallying finish times when he returned, while Blaik and Bob ran Green with a data-logger, their trax will be attached to these notes, cool!
This is a first, where the park entrance fee was collected by us, I found that everyone was okay with this format. We normally use this format at the State Forest. I requested from the permitting ranger we do this again since the park could never put out enough of those 'blue envelopes'.
Since the whole week of Sept.7-13 was National Orienteering Week, we had some free gifts from OUSA closet. We awarded a new pair of IceBug racing shoes to a new JROTC cadet from Titusville and a OUSA 1-year membership to a random winner, they have not responded to my notice so name withheld until ??
I am sure that I left the names of some expert helpers and will include them when I can put a name to the face.
THANK YOU ALL !!
Ray Bruneau
