No rain at this event.(it poured 3 yrs. ago) We had a large number of helpers turn out: I want to mention this first since I always seem to forget someone (I may this time too). There was a group of 16 scouts from Palm Harbor with their leaders, BSA Patrick Flynn & party, Bob and Janet were setting up early but were called away to assist Toby with the JROTC cadet training. My thanks go out to my daughter Cheryl, Frank Kuhn, John Griffin, Eric Johnson, Tracy Acuff, Joe Mailszewski and Jerry Sirmans. The latter two seem to show up for pick-up only.
THANK YOU ALL !!
I heard later that there was a 1k O'course set up for training/sprinting: that would have been a fun wager. Frank Kuhn pulled the registration table along with a new member, Eric Johnson coming from Palm Coast. I started putting parties out right at 0915 and counted toward the 38th person, Cheryl helped me count, I did't want to miss it. John Griffin, then helped me on the START/FINISH table showing the scouts our S/F process. Tracy Acuff went out early, came back in and relieved John and I since the rush was over. She stayed until I returned from my course and tallied all the times, thank you. It seemed that I had some competition from Dash/Pangea who passed me, I never saw that FLASH team.
So, our 50,000 entrant was part of a large group from Boone High School, the captain of their small JROTC unit Alexandra Harriger was the randomly drawn name. I got both an individual picture of her, and the BHS group. Her dad says "that made her day"; she looked shocked and happy.
We had a report of some misplaced/missing controls on the ORANGE course and since Jonathan had just arrived, he escorted Linda out on the course to investigate. I later heard that 2 controls were misplaced and relocated. The Clayburn's came out with the grandkids, who had fun running in the woods.
After the rush, Eric Johnson decided to try hiking a GREEN course for the first time, only to discover, he had lost his cellphone. So, he called home and had his son "find his phone" using an app. that took a satelite picture of its location. I happened to recognize the overview location where the 'Split Oak Forest' sign is located just across the causeway and from there directed him to the 'spot' and he actually found his cellphone. He had to go back across the causeway for a second time but he did go home with the found item.
I took a return picture of Jason Scott and his 16 mo. daughter, Roxie, who rode out the BLUE course on dads' shoulders, they must had a great time. Jerry had taken some pictures of them coming across the causeway.
I arrived early, got to run a RED course and departed when Jerry returned from his control pick-up. We had lots of help and I saw many smiling faces. Thanks again for coming out and we'll see you next month at Wekiva Springs SP.
