The first orienteering event at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in Sumter County took place under threatening skies on November 26th. The event was primarily a JROTC event with FLO members and the public also invited to participate on the three courses offered.
The JROTC event attracted 85 students from five schools, all from the west coast of Florida. Central of nearby Hernando County dominated the results winning first and second place team in each color category. They also won the majority of the individual medals. If that weren’t enough teams of students from Central also partnered with parents from South Sumter, the host school, to very efficiently handle the Start, Map exchange and Finish tables. Central handled the Results and South Sumter parents the Registration.
Despite its long name Dade is a small park with two distinct vegetation sections – pine scrubland and open oak forest. The park is criss-crossed with trails. Course setting was a challenge but so it seemed was the need for participants to check control codes and not punch in at the wrong control.
Orange and Green courses had a map exchange part way through the course. This allowed the course setter to send participants back over the same area without fear that they could punch controls out of order.
Despite Central’s dominance in the results team prizes were also won by Robinson and Gaither of Tampa and the host school, South Sumter.
'Technical problems’ prevent the posting of the full results for the seven individuals and pairs that participated in the civilian part of the event. Special note should be made of Leigh Thomas who drove over from the Orlando area did 41 minutes on the Green course before completing the Yellow course.
The father/daughter team of John Gavel and eight year old Adelie drove over from Melbourne to participate on the Green course. It was a pleasure to see Adelie’s enthusiasm for orienteering and her insistence on participating on the Green Course. At Dade that was do-able. The team completed their course in just over two hours.
May-Li Cuypers of Tampa brought out her father Paul from Belgium who participated on Yellow while she was to do the Green. Unfortunately a technical slip up happened and at the start May-Li received the Orange 2 course instead of Green 1. This made it very confusing for her when she arrived at the finish instead of the map exchange and then found herself visiting a lot of the same controls on her second loop. My apologies to May-Li.
Thanks go to L Cdr Charlie Jacobs of South Sumter for pulling the event together, to Col Mike Ralph and his team for the able support and to the Masons of Bushnell for providing lunch for the teams.
