Courses: WHITE | YELLOW | ORANGE | GREEN | RED | BLUE | NOTES

This was not only the inaugural event of the 2012-2013 "season", but also the 3rd Annual Orienteering Festival at F.A.M. (by definition every hottest month of the year event at FAM is the "Festival", it seems), AND it was FLO's version of National Orienteering Day (N.O.D.), where we celebrate and encourage new members.

As luck would have it, we also received the latest shipment of FLO T-shirts the day before the event, so everyone got a good look at the latest incarnation of our Manatee mascot and lots of folks took home one of the new shirts at the never-to-be-beat price of $10 per. You can see an example or the new color, worn by me, in the photo accompanying the "FLO VP wins national award" link under "Events" on this web site.

N.O.D. award winners were selected from first-timers and included:
Alicia Austin, The Larry Slatinsky family, Five Wild Texans and Bonnie von Hausch - Free passes for their next FLO event and a OUSA bumper sticker for each.

Grand prize went to Bill & Terry Townsley: a one year membership in Orienteering USA including a subscription to the magazine Orienteering North America.

The "original" event of the day was the pair of horseback riders who went out on White. FLO's first Mounted-O competitors at a regular event. Maybe we'll do more.

Congratulations to Ray Bruneau for winning the Elite Blue course. Ray's winning time of over 2 hours on Blue and the Orange course winning time of 70 minutes, were both a tad longish, so as course-setter I must apologize somewhat. I did, however, make it a point to tell Blue course people it was going to be long and tough, as evidenced by only 2 of nine entries finishing the course. As usual I urged (unsuccessfully) several first timers not to try the advanced courses right away, so I was not surprised that the "Five Wild Texans" didn't finish Green or that the full family who insisted on Blue didn't finish either. Make a note, folks, that completing a course successfully is more fun and more rewarding than failing to finish, even if you might fairly insist you had a good time out there.

In pre-event notices I suggested you would all get your feet wet at this event, but it didn't happen. Most of the woods were dry. The weather was beautiful, not horribly hot, and the control retrievers at the end of the day were lightly rained on - a good thing.

We will be keeping a close eye on the progress to be made by St Johns River Water Management District's plans to clear cut a portion of our map east of I-95 this coming winter, so next year's advanced level courses could very well be venturing into new areas altogether. We look forward to it and hope you do to.

Our thanks go to Janet Putnam, Ray & Cheryl Bruneau, Frank Kuhn, Kris Mante, Jerry Sirmans, Joe M, Mike & Marilu Dempsey, and a few nameless but good kids from among the JROTC cadets, for helping to run a successful event.
