What a fabulous day!
The rain held off!
The humidity was, like, under 90%!
Everyone graciously allowed me to believe that my explanations were clear as to what the heck an O-Maze was. We had out-of-country orienteers attending – Ulf Bergquist is from Sweden and the Davrilov’s are from Montreal Canada. We had doggone-near-out-of-country orienteers, coming all the way from Tallahassee and West Palm. And plenty of volunteer help after all, despite my last minute concerns; Thanks to Jack Cash, Janet Putnam, Mike Dempsey, Kris Mante, Joe Maliszewski and also to Ray’s daughter Cheryl for the handy handout writeup explaining orienteering. We stashed several copies in the ‘black box’ and handed out several more during the day to drop-by’s who were wondering what we were up to. Very thoughtful.
As for the event itself, no more need be said than: Look at the “One-Hour” score category; Ulf must have averaged about 7 min/km through our junky LBE vegetation even without ever having been there before. None of us could do that and we stand in awe of that kind of performance, especially after he claims he made a 12 minute error. Amazing. He’s promised to provide me with an email chronicling his run, so I’ll share when it comes in.
Score events always please me as a course designer because there are never any DQ’s or DNF’s. That is, until I insert an O-Maze scheme into the mix. Then it is possible to DNF and a couple did, although it’s probably my fault for not explaining the whole thing clearly enough. In fact, for those of you reading this who did not attend and do not yet understand an “O-Maze”, write to me via the FLO web page address and I’ll explain.
All in all a terrific success in terms of LBE, at least. Thanks to all for attending. Thanks to all the helpers. May your summer be filled with nothing but blessings and we hope to see you all at the Fall season events.
