The Second Annual Orienteering Festival was a fine success. A slightly larger crowd than last year by all accounts enjoyed the courses, all three of which remained completely within the confines of the Ag. Museum itself. All very safe for novices, you see.
I count 106 total attendees competing on 60 different maps.
The whole purpose of these events is to introduce orienteering to a whole new set of outdoor lovers, mostly from the NE corner of Florida. We seem to be achieving that since roughly 3/4 of the attendees were new to orienteering. Even better: they all seemed to enjoy themselves despite the verging-on-oppressive heat and humidity. It was indeed a, shall we say, typical Florida August Saturday: 95F with maybe 75% Relative Humidity.
We welcomed a few Brits from McDill Airbase as well as some FLO veterans like the Francis Marion JROTC cadets, the Yarborough Ranchers and Artur Instons (Latvian native) who took first place (well, all places actually) in the Score Event consisting of visiting all controls in any order he'd like. Only now, as he's reading this, will he realize he was the only entrant on the Special Score Course event - but I wanted to give him a good workout.
I'd like to thank everyone who pitched in to help - my wife Janet, Ray Bruneau, Eric Heritage, Jamie and John Sherriff, Team Poison Ivy and the whole Venture Scouting contingent turned out by the Museum folks to help us out. You were terrific and thanks to all.
