REPORT ON THE LITTLE BIG ECON EVENT
For having a relatively low turnout (who can blame them - IT's HOT!) there is a ton of stuff to discuss. In no particular order:
- Thanks go to Jack Cash, Kris Mante, Ray Bruneau, Janet Putnam, Frank Kuhn, Jerry Sirmans, Joe Maliszewski, John Sherriff, Will Pirnasch and Albert Baerren for help in setting controls, retrieving controls and assisting at Start/Finish and registration. Notice it takes about as many volunteers at an event with 54 attendees as it does for 200+ attendees. Thanks also to Jonathan Linforth for producing yet another set of pre-printed maps and for graciously accommodating my interminable map edits.
- The weather was fabulous: 94F for a high; Usual Humidity; no clouds to speak of. In sum: hot, hot, hot...and muggy.
- The water was low - which is also fabulous. Fewer snakes and gators wandering about.
- Some visitors to Control #49 saw the wild pig skeleton.
- Artur Intson brought along some relatives and friends from Latvia, who I sincerely hope had as much fun as we Floridians do in the palmetto-strewn floodplains of LBE. At least I saw them smiling afterwards, so I'm thinking they enjoyed themselves.
- The courses were apparently a little tougher than I thought - but then again, when is that not the case. I want to give you your money's worth. Several folks had trouble with Control #37 and I suppose that affected the number who visited the other tough ones out there: 38, 39 and maybe 40.
- The folks who DNF'ed on Green mostly did so at #37. However, it's such a beautiful orienteering feature, calling on multiple classical techniques to approach it successfully, that I'll probably keep using it over the years until everyone 'gets' it.
- In the meantime, we need to be updating the map. Lots of folks let me know they think the map needs updating. I know.
- We were privileged to enjoy the company of two of the Yarborough boys this day. The Yarborough family once owned good pieces of LBE and have over the years generously shared their ranchlands with adventure racers. We're running on their old turf. Thanks Yarboroughs.
- We were also visited by both Jeff Davis and Carl Lewis. I just had to say it.
- Here's a "Way-to-Go": Chris Johnson was the only one to have visited all controls on the Score-O course; and he did so in less than 90 minutes. I don't think I could have done it that fast and I know where they all are.
- Ron Eaglin said he sort of took it easy doing the Red courses in 87 minutes and I suppose Mike Dempsey paced himself carefully, too, in deference to the heat.
- Both John Sherriff and Will Pirnasch took trash bags out with them and collected a full bag each of random trash. Mostly beer cans. Thanks to both. Next time we'll give big time rewards to those who do that.
- We had an offer from one attendee to do surgery on our web page, since she'd gotten lost just trying to find Barr Street, apparently. We eagerly asked for a formal proposal to re-work the whole page.
- Jerry Sirmans took lots of photos and lots of short videos. Check them out on the web page.
- Even though Jack Cash and Guler Arsal were over the normal time limit of 180 minutes, I didn't have the heart to list them OT on this day, with these courses. They worked hard.
- Lots of folks were over the 2-hour time limit on the Score-O, too, but again, I decided not to bother penalizing them by calculating Penalty Points and all that.
- There is a tabulation at the end of this report showing the percentage of competitors visiting each control on the Score-O course. If its still legible, check it out and see how your route choices compare.
- It was most gratifying to have a number of newbies turn out for this event and especially to hear from each of them that they'd had fun. Thank you all for coming.
- And we had a visit from a ranger. A first. Turned out we had nothing for him to do. Just as well.
Thanks to everyone for braving the Florida Summer, and if you weren't there, well, you should have been. Now that you all know what a Score-O course is, expect some variations, and by that I mean departure from, 'regular' orienteering at next year's LBE event also.
Bob Putnam, Event Coordinator.
