The forecast for the day was 93 degrees, sunny, humid, and hot! I was sweating just sitting in the shade at the pavilion. Most racers were drenched with sweat, at the least. Is it really October? I’m thinking a paddling-O would have been nice today, if there could be such a thing.
I want to thank all volunteers: Mike & Marilu Dempsey, Bill Brown, Lorena & Levy, Ray Bruneau, and Jim Feudner for helping at the registration and start/finish tables. Also, Dave Brault and Jerry Sirmans for control retrieval. Toby Henson: Thank you for your help in delivering the supplies (including maps) and setting out the signs. Jonathan Linforth: It was good to put a face to the name, thank you for production of the maps.
It was really a bottleneck at the beginning and took a good hour plus to get everyone out on the course. I was told this is normal. Thank you all for your patience, both volunteers and orienteers. We had a good showing today of ROTC cadets, individuals, couples, friends, and families. Good job to those experienced orienteers who took their time to teach others. Your help and assistance is invaluable.
Apologies are due to those who ran the White course. Three of the controls were in error. The 3 digit numbers on control #1 and #4 where switched, and control #2 was further east than where it was marked on the map. Credit was given to the teams who could not find #2. There was no mention of any controls on the Split Oak side as being misplaced.
I also want to mention an honorary finish to Team Awesome for helping to rescue a member of one of the ROTC teams who fell ill and had to be sent out with EMS. Thank you for lending out your map for the rescue workers to be able to find them. Remember: Sound 3 long blasts from your emergency whistle anytime you or one of your teammates is in need of emergency assistance when out in the woods.
Also remember to check in to the finish table when you do not finish a course, so we know you are not lost. We are concerned about everyone’s safety.
