Florida Orienteering
FLO CHAMPIONSHIPS - KELLY PARK
DECEMBER 13, 2008

Courses: Medals | WHITE | YELLOW | ORANGE | GREEN | RED | BLUE | NOTES

We started off with a brisk but sunny day. There was an offer to move the registration table out from the pavilion and into the sunshine ... which was quickly seconded by Janet - not that is was cold, but bone chilly in the shade. The Crystal River JROTC unit had taken control of the younger crowd; a light load due to the SAT tests conducted on this day. The Kelly Park Rangers were a little put out by our presence due to their preparations for the afterneen kick-off of the Kelly Park Christmas celebration with Santa Claus. No harm intended or taken, but we had to reroute everyone around the springhead to the usual starting gate - 1 kM was a good warm up for the legs. One ranger did inquire about a lost hiker they found. There were some who lost sight of the direction signs to the Start area. The Start table was headed by John Ide and his student, Levy. The ROTC table had their hands full at the rush but were able to handle it all.

My run on Red encountered a large group at the edge of the Orange turnaround, it seems that they were fascinated by the deep sinkhole which was a control point. When I placed this control, I hesitated placing it on the bottom due to the steep sides, I didn't want to have stories of having to pull someone out. With foresight of the possible number of runners(kids) having to go into it, I placed the control on an obscured tree at its rim.

I noticed that there was a prescribed burn area that gave some runners a reason to become color-confused, for me this whole park has changed remarkably in 10 years. I can remember the large tree canopies at Live Oak Camp and the heavy undergrowth in the southern part of the park, some places I had to watch my every step. This time of year, you can be overwelmed by the multiple shades of red from the turkey oaks, that in itself made finding a faded control a challenge. The rest of the course was equally difficult, deciding the correct thicket and reading the map correctly. I had one person tell me that they had looked for a control(742) for an hour, to which I remarked "It sure is sweet when you do, though". The final length from 'GO' made an easy jog on trail -- nice touch, Will.

Upon returning to the Finish table, I noticed that John had been relieved by Russ, who opted out of running. John and Russ managed to assist Jerry in control pickup with a visitor - David Levine from Buffalo, NY who happened to come thru this area on his way to Vero Beach. Dave is heavy into frigid O', stating that he comes down to the Navigator Cup in Georgia to warm up, lucky him.

At return to the Registration table, I relieved Janet to allow her departure and again, thanked her for her assistance and expertise in registration. I got a chance to talk to some members and newcomers. Derek mentioned that it would be nice if Johnathan would reformat this particular map to 1:10000 due to him having to bring his seeing eye dog everytime he comes to Kelly/Wekiva. (LOL) But Derek registered as Derek Scott, so I am not sure any request by a non-member can sing a valid tone. On another note, Dimitri, from Moscow, Russia was telling stories of Orienteering at home that have 2000 entrants and evening training sessions that can bring some 300. I suspect you may see him in the next year for he is a student pilot. He said that he had trouble deciphering our map coloring and actual features, very different and difficult. 'ya think?

I got a chance to talk with Lorena and Levy Kleinmann about a Miami O'-event at Oleta Park that she is heading up in March. I told her that we would support her in any way possible. They want to attempt Bike-O, as well. I am sure that our assistance will be generously needed. Stay tuned, those interested in a Miami trip.

I managed to repack, watching Santa make his entry into the park on a blaring fire truck. I welcomed John and Russ back from control pickup and was almost home when Jerry made it out. I wused out on him. On a parting note, the next time that you see Will, tell him what you think of his Course Designs. I thought they were done quite well, the shades of red really got me. If I missed someone/something, speak up.

From the Event Coordinator, Russ would like to thank everyone who participated, have a great Holiday!!

I look forward to another great year of running in the woods -- good for the spirit!!
