Courses: YELLOW | SCORE-1 | SCORE-2 | SCORE-3 | BLUE | NOTES

Way to go gang! You almost busted our Permit.

Recall that LBE staff for the last few years has been hard on us and have limited us, by the terms of our permit, to 75 people at events there. We have been scheduling LBE as our (hot) June event knowing the head count would be diminished and we have never yet pushed the limit. The 73 who showed up last Saturday were a pleasant surprise and just about filled the parking corral.

Was it warm? Yes! Was it humid? Yes! Was it Fun? A resounding “Yes” was heard from all attendees, reacting to the rather novel (these days) “Score” format.

As a result of suggestions by my wife, Janet, and George Pyros (who I see at work all the time) I had added a Yellow course, for those who would either rather not wrestle with the complexity of Score-Course strategies, or who really do want to practice skills on a ’real’ orienteering course.

In addition, fate worked to provide the opportunity for an 8.02 km Blue course as well. I was surprised to find several folks eager to venture out on an 8km course on such a day, but they all seemed to enjoy the peculiarly splendid misery of 90 degree swamp thrashing.

As course designer, I call it a success. As Event Coordinator, it was a disaster, because I left Janet to single handedly contend with the entire crowd, all of whom had apparently taken my advice to show up early – and simultaneously. With all three of us additional helpers out in the woods setting controls, Janet had to somehow both register everyone and explain the ins and outs of Score-O and the surprise Blue course. She’s still speaking to me, by the way, but only because she understands what an idiot I am and can forgive such a thing. You see, we three others would have been there to help but I had forgotten Score-O clue sheets at home, so had to drive back to get them and therefore set controls late, and I had also neglected to tell Lorena which LBE entrance we were using so she also set her controls late due to arriving late. So, many thanks to Helpers Janet, Lorena Kleinmann and her boyfriend (Who has introduced himself to me three times now and I am unable to retain his name! I apologize). Additional thanks to Brandon Owen who retrieved most of the controls on Sunday after just having been introduced to the sport on Saturday for the first time.

Note some remarkable items from the results list: Catherine and Anna Eaglin (ages 12? And 11? I think) and Kurk and Elizabeth Pyros (ages 12? and 10? I think) completed their first ‘solo’ Yellow courses at this event. Congratulations to each. On the Score course the Schmid party qualified for the “1-Hour” limit category by exactly one second, thus taking First Place. Hooray. In the 3-Hour category Andy Canelos and Steven Spencer visited every control with Andy placing first by virtue of elapsed time. Team Badfish found them all but went overtime, which would ordinarily have disqualified them altogether but on this day simply earned them penalty points to finish with 70 net points. On the Blue course Ron Eaglin, as expected, dominated the field, which included Will Pirnasch withdrawing with a sprained ankle and Go Blue really being disqualified with an OT (actually I pulled the last control on them before they finished). Other notables included tiebreakers for Bret Barker at 96 points and Lammi Lambert at 30 points. Notice the Score-O results in terms of finishing times: 12 out of 16 people in the 3-Hour category finished at between 142 and 158 minutes. This probably speaks volumes about some threshold of exhaustion or windedness or enjoyment for the average O-er, and should probably be kept in mind for future events. I had no clue sheet or finish time from Charlene Akers so could not place her either in time category or points. Charlene, if you get those to us, we can edit these results.

I have summarized the results of the Score event in terms of controls visited. I expected a huge variation with a few controls being visited by all and then a few controls being visited by only a few. Yet look at the table. All controls were visited by half or more and none were visited by all. Hmmmm. I learn new things all the time. I’m assuming it means the course was perfectly designed!

So, the first Score course by FLO in years was a success. Enjoy your summer. Let us know if you’d like to conduct a summer training session or a Fun Day of your own. Otherwise, we’ll see you in the woods in the Fall at RSRSR the Saturday after Labor Day, the 13th of September, which will be National Orienteering Day with door prizes and giveaways. Bring a friend.
