It’s always a pleasure to leave the high-speed roads and drive through the gates of Moss Park where the sand hill cranes are strutting about and the live oaks draped with Spanish moss create a tranquil and picturesque landscape. It was such a quiet and peaceful place when Will and I hung the controls on Friday. The last thing I did was place the three signs pointing to our pavilion. When I returned at 0830 on Saturday there were at least a dozen people already there.
The crowd grew. The busy and hectic rush to answer queries, register people and send runners on their way started. There were just enough volunteers with Janet Putnam and Rick Orcutt doing registration, Greg Owens doing WY starts and Jack and Trace Graham doing the remote starts for the OGPRB courses. Bob Putnam handled all of the loose ends like giving instruction and correcting a control I had misplaced. The ROTC groups were running their own events and were just as busy.
Around 11:00 Jack Cash returned from his run and took over the remote S/F table. This job really needs two people and I know he was swamped at times, but he kept things running smoothly. Donna Fluegel arrived to help with registration and Rick and Kathy Orcutt took over the WY S/F table. All of the volunteers worked long shifts to get the jobs done. Things were running so well I stole away and ran a course myself.
As I was waiting to start at the causeway a barefooted guy with muddy feet was returning carrying one shoe. I would have liked to have heard his story. While I was running Jack said a guy came in who looked like he’d been through a hurricane. When Jack asked for his control card he reached into his pocket and pulled out a wet, wadded ball of paper. (We need a camera at the finish line for moments like this). His story was that the shortest distance between his two points was a swim across some water. Do we need a picture of an alligator at our starts and reminder that swimming is not a part of any course? In fact, land travel is the only permitted way to get from one control to the next.
The fact that everyone was in and we started closing procedures by 15:30, and out of 95 groups (156 individuals) starting excluding ROTC; there were only 4 DNFs (a record?) is testimony to what perfect courses Will Pirnasch set. All that was left was to retrieve the controls. Jerome Sirmans and Scott Akers took care of that. Many thanks to the volunteers who made this meet possible.
