What a day for the start of Orienteering season!
Maybe a wee bit warm while running out in the open, but not too bad once you got under some shade... and you did remember to carry lots of water; right?
We had a great turnout, with lots of first timers. I spent a solid 1.5 hours providing instruction ... after which I had almost lost my voice - and I think Bob was handling some additional instruction at the same time. Despite the crowds we only saw about 6 people during our 'run' of the Orange course - where was everyone I wonder.
Anyone who went 'off trail' probably ate a few spiders. I think they must really like the recent weather we've been having - I have never seen so many of them. Disapointingly, the spiders were the only wildlife we saw, other than a few birds we scared up from their nests while fighting through some undergrowth we mistakenly entered.
I would like to thank all those who helped out and made it such a great event. My applogies to Will Pirnasch who returned from retreiving all the Red/Blue controls to find that the table on which he had left his car keys was gone! (Along with Myself, Bob, and all other FLO helpers) Luckily our ROTC friends who were taking the equipment were still around, and he was able to find his keys by digging through all our gear.
Despite the heat and the length of the courses we had 17 intrepid O'ers run the Blue course. That was rather more than expected so Jerry Sirmans and I were barely keeping up with making copies of the map and clue sheet for the latest entrants.
We had 4 new members and a bunch of renewals, and received many comments about how much people had enjoyed their day, so it seems like it was a great success. We also collected over 200 pounds of food which the Second Harvest food bank was happy to accept. Thank you all.
So let's all have some more fun at the National Orienteering Day event next month at Moss Park. See you all there I hope.
