A pleasant day for orienteering - a bit warmish but we missed the wind and rain of the next day. We had a great turnout, what with the JROTC Championships as well as our regulars. It must have been a record or very nearly so: Ray reported an attendance of 326, a bit more than half of which coming to the JROTC tables. We actually ran out of Orange maps, and managed to reclaim a few from early finishers to supply some of the later starters. Again, the well-equipped concession stand provided by the JROTC folks created a festival-like atmosphere - with great hot dogs and hamburgers, drinks, and extras available for purchase making this otherwise rather austere site an event to remember. I think I speak for all of our members in saying that we are proud to help stage a significant part of their training program, and in turn are greatly enhanced by their level of participation.
Our thanks go to Will Pirnasch, who designed some great courses, if a bit longish, including separate courses for the JROTC events. One of the controls was placed in the middle of what our map shows as a lake that our recent lack of rain has left dry. There were reports of some dead hogs apparently shot by hunters on the Red course, not a pleasant site (or smell!). Even the Orange course was a toughie, as attested by an unusually large number of DNFs: if you were thinking about stepping up to a more difficult course, this was not the day to do it! Some last-minute arrangements to set controls made necessary by circumstances came off without incident, and I heard no complaints about misplaced or otherwise unsuitable control positioning other than a punch at one of them that mysteriously became missing very late in the day. This was truly a concern of mine as I found only about half a dozen ribbons among those 16 positions that I set. Thanks to Jonathan, Ray, and Bob for pitching in.
Thanks also to Rick for ably handling registration at the FLO table much of the day, a first-time volunteer for us though with past experience. Jack and son Trace took care of the start/finish table for the busy first hour and a half or so, and John, Ray and Jerry helped out as needed. Thanks, too, to Jerry and Ray for their help in retrieving controls. As has been the case for the past several years, separate registration and start/finish tables have been staffed by the JROTC people for their portion of the event. Thanks to Toby and his able crew for their part in making things run smoothly.
Finally, without the vital efforts of Jonathan in producing our preprinted maps, we could not continue to maintain the quality of the events that we do. We all owe him a very large debt of gratitude.
