Another day of great weather, we adjust to having another day of sunshine. The morning temperature was a crisp 55 but warmed to a high 68, great weather for running.
The sides of the road were covered with debris from the tornados that traveled across the state a week prior (more of this later). We were not expecting many but we prepared for it as well. We turned out 113 participants and 5 ROTC groups of about 80.
Jonathan and I had some great help from both Donna & Steve Fluegal as Couse Designer/Setter. They both bring a tremendous amount of experience to bear as they both helped out at registration and organizing the separate 'Start' of the ROTC group. I heard of no problems with any courses, we even had a 1st time family down from Jax who had so much fun, he tried White, Orange and Red. I had enlisted John Ide, who came to the Start table and instructed Jack Graham and his son, Trace. I hope to utilize them all in furture events. John was relieved by Russ Steinke when he returned from his Green run. Janet Putnam and Steve Fluegal were tending the registration table, learning the new Registration cards. I have found that not all cards are legible making transcribing the results a bit difficult and we have a bit of card of no value when completed.
While out on the RED couse, coming off of R5, I noticed a slice of paper on the ground. After seeing many pieces, curiosity got me and I decided to pick this one up and read the printing on it. This was a section of check from the Lady Lake Church of God that was in the media after it was completely destroyed in the tornado that had come thru the week before. This check was from the account of Building and Landscape, how ironic. I cannot decribe the amount of styrofoam insulation, vinyl siding, shingle material, aluminum roofing and printed media that had come to rest on the forest floor. Can you imagine all this debris raining down along with actual precipitation? Upon finishing, I noticed several bags of this material that was rescued from the forest. I am not sure who was instrumental in the effort: "GREAT JOB".
As always, I enjoy coordinating the event but I really have fun getting lost in the woods.
