We could not have asked for a better day for Orienteering, despite the weather forecast and the actual overnight rain and the actual early morning sprinkles. From 10:00 AM we had clear skies with a cool 5-10 mph breeze, with temperatures up around 80 at mid-day.
This event was special in that the 2004-2005 Florida Interscholastic JROTC Championships were being held at the same time as our regular FLO event. A total of 233 people enjoyed one of the nine courses, counting the three JROTC Championship courses, where 91 cadets competed individually.. Congratulations to Titusville High School for their first place finish, to West Centennial High School for their second place, and to Crystal River High School for third. The trophies this year for the JROTC were even more spectacular than in previous years. It would seem that just having trophies like that in the cases at the high schools would be enough to prompt a wider interest in orienteering.
Many thanks go to the Fluegels, Steve and Donna, for their help on this event. They vetted each control location well beforehand, prepared all the clue sheets, set all the controls the day before (thus avoiding that usual day-of-event morning rush that FLO is prone to) and then Steve showed up to help most of the day at registration and start/finish. Just the normal sort of help the Fluegels provide while they stay with us each winter.
All the Thank You's due others would be better done the day after the event, but here it is 12 days later and I'm just getting around to writing this - therefore spotty memories come into play. I remember Jonathan Linforth showing up early with maps and staying around for hours until he had to leave for work. Bill Barolet showed up early and helped set up, as did many JROTC cadets. Mike & Marilu Dempsey were much in evidence at registration. Russ Steinke and Arild Orsleie ran start./finish, too. Then Joe Maliszewski and Jerry Sirmans and I believe Mike Dempsey, retrieved controls. Toby Henson ran JROTC registration as well as their remote start/finish with lots of his usual helpers. Thanks to all, and of course especially to all those I've neglected to mention. We had a nice visit from horse people interested in Mounted-O, so there may be an event soon out at Shockley Ranch, using previously designed courses that proved very popular with FLO-member Tami Jicha and her fellow Lake County Mounted Deputies.
Most importantly, we said "Goodbye" to Arild Orsleie who told us at the event that it would be his last FLO run for a while. He's relocating to Phoenix and will be sorely missed. He has never attended a FLO event, it seems, when his name did not appear on the Thanks-to-Helpers list. And he even went out in style, placing just behind winner Artur Intson on the Red course. Thanks for coming out and we hope to see you all again soon.
