Courses: WHITE | SCORE

First of all, we'd like to apologize to everyone who came out expecting a full complement of courses, only to have to choose between White and Score courses. This park is a challenge to course designers. Introductory (White and Yellow) courses are easy to design; there are many nice features around the spring pool and along the short nature trail. Advanced (Green, Red, and Blue) courses also are easy to design, aside from the single long trail out to the north section of the park. (I swear that trail is longer running in to finish that it is when I'm running north!)

The intermediate (Orange) course, however, is tough. There aren't enough challenging features in the manicured section of the park, but the north section is too far from the staging area. Different course designers have tried various compromises, all of which had problems. A score course is a common compromise, at least in FLO, but many competitors prefer to run their usual class.

But don't give up on DeLeon Springs yet! FLO officials are looking into the possibility of staging the March 2001 event from the north section! This would allow everyone to see the beautiful north section of the park, and greatly simplify course design.

----------

The White course was short (~1.7 km), a perfect length for first-timers, but merely a warm-up for more experienced orienteers (hint, hint, Holy Cross). The Score course, on the other hand, may have been a bit much for some. Of the 57 (ooops, we thought 50 clue/punch sheets would be plenty) individuals or teams who did the score course, only four finished in 60 minutes. Roughly a dozen more were just a little over 60 minutes. The rest played golf, and tried to get the lowest score possible. (Perhaps the five-points-per-minute penalty was a little high.)

A few teams ignored the usual three hour time limit, and one other team, who will go nameless (except below), didn't even check-in at the finish table! These teams had the FLO Search/Rescue people pretty nervous. S&R-types always imagine the worst - please don't do this to them!

Thanks to Kim Johnson for her help at the Registration and Finish tables, Joe Maliszewski for helping retrieve flags, Bob Putnam for instruction, Janet Putnam for Registration help, Elsie Matthews for staying late to check-in the late score teams, and Frank Kuhn for everything else.
