Bob Putnam - Golden Troll Award Winner

FLO VP WINS NATIONAL AWARD

 At the 2012 US Orienteering Federation Annual General Meeting held in Laramie Wyoming in August 2012, long time FLO member and co-founder Frank Kuhn successfully nominated FLO VP Bob Putnam for a special USOF Award. Bob is pictured here happily receiving the Certificate commemorating the award, which also included a distinctive lapel pin. The Golden Troll Award is awarded annually to several individuals each year, recognized as having provided exceptional service to the sport of orienteering.

The text of Frank's nomination follows:

  1. VP-Competition for FLO for 21 years.
  2. Played key role in 3 Class "A" nationally sanctioned events.
  3. Wrote Rules for Participation in FLO events.
  4. Set 2+ permanent Orienteering Courses.
  5. Wrote the article "Florida Orienteering: Not traditional orienteering by any means" for ONADIGITAL 2011.
  6. Established the program for JROTC attendance at FLO events: JROTC coordinators email FLO 2-weeks prior to an event with their intentions to participate and the number of maps they will need. JROTC personnel set up, man and run their events in parallel with FLO and pay FLO a per person fee for each participant.
  7. Established the design for the Annual Florida JROTC Orienteering Camps (2012 will be the 10th one). Cadets train on Friday and Saturday and compete on Sunday. The camps are limited to 200 paid registrants.
Those in the know within FLO will of course realize, as Bob points out, that he has had lots and lots of help over the years in carrying out any of the achievements mentioned. Because this award reflects positively on all the helpers, volunteers, and Board members of FLO, we all thank Frank for bringing these aspects of FLO's work to national attention.
